Helping Folks Battle MS
Resources
I thought it would be helpful to create a resource page that you can always come to for great products and services. I’ll continue to add to it, but will look to you for help as well. If you have anything that has been of particular help to you in your walk down MS's path, please send me a message and I'll get it listed. This community is all about helping each other. Get info - give info. I recommend bookmarking this page for your reference and convenience.

Please do not spend any money on these products unless you feel you need them or that they will help you.
Hot off the Press
I'm so excited to bring this new book to you.

I LOVE IT. There is just the right combination of facts and funny. Truly, this is an uncomfortable topic to discuss at any level, and the information given is thorough, clear, and easily understandable - with a few chuckles thrown in. I'm a firm believer in not taking anything too seriously, and while this subject matter has the potential to be big problems for us MS’ers, I learned a lot and am Kegel-ing away. Thank you again, best wishes and best of luck! And, always, FUMS.

Thank you so much for all your hard work. The book is going to be a wonderful resource for those of us who struggle with these lovely issues. I’d recommend this ebook to anyone suffering from these issues.

The authors have tackled a subject that is extremely common but oftentimes not addressed by patients or health care professionals. Perhaps this reticence is because patients are embarrassed and/or members of the medical community are unaware that treatment options exist. This book breaks down both of those barriers. Using humor and accessible language it addresses sensitive issues while providing guidance on how to achieve symptomatic improvement.

I really liked the book. It was quick and easy reading for my MS brain, and was informative with a good laugh here and there. If you didn't want to put it on your coffee table, it would be great bathroom reading material! I will definitely recommend this book, not to just MS’ers, but anyone with undercarriage issues.
Books
MS Specific
Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers by Dr. David Perlmutter. I think we can all agree that the "Cog Fog" we feel is one of the most disturbing of our multitude of symptoms. Dr. Perlmutter, a world-renowned neurologist with a fellowship in nutrition, works with people who have MS, Alzheimer's and other brain-related diseases daily. He recognized the link between nutritional choices and brain disease progression - even initial disease. He believes that many of these diseases are preventable. At the very least, they are stoppable. Dementia, ADD, anxiety, depression - it's all addressed in this book. Do yourself a favor - get it, read it, live it.
Minding My Mitochondria 2nd Edition: How I overcame secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) and got out of my wheelchair by Dr. Terry Wahls - This is an incredibly inspiring story of a doctor who fought back using "intensive nutritionals" to triumph against MS - and how you can too!
Despite MS, To Spite MS, by Dan and Jennifer Digmann. Fantastic look inside a marriage where both are afflicted with MS - to differing degrees. This book helped me see the bright side of things - find the happy - and choose to get up and go, not weigh how difficult something was going to be. Their relationship - filled with love, dedication and commitment - is really inspiring.

Cooling Gear - if you’re not aware of it, a great majority of MS patients cannot tolerate the heat – and in fact, find themselves thrown into a flare or a full-blown exacerbation when unable to cool down. As such, several companies have come up with helpful products designed to lower the temperature for those who need it. Here are some of the best: Cooling Vests – for an all-over quick cooling effect, choose one of these cooling vests. It is almost instantaneous cooling and last for hours. Read the descriptions carefully: some can be worn underneath clothing more easily than others. Neck Wraps – this is my personal favorite item from this category. There are several different styles to choose from. I like those that can be either frozen or heated. I have spasticity in my upper back and neck so the heat helps me at times. When it’s 90+ degrees with equal humidity in the hot southern Virginia summers, a cold neck wrap brings my temperature down fast and keeps it down. It’s imperative for me if I’m going to be able to function in the heat. The kind that have lavender in them are my favorites. You get aromatherapy as well!! BONUS!! I LOVE this one: Aroma Wrap Heated or Cooled Herbal Neck Wrap On The Go Series (Lavender). Our FUMS community member Grace Kopp has the opposite problem: she’s always cold. She suggests getting a heated blanket and being in control of your own thermostat!
